Blown Call

I feel really bad for Armando Galarraga. I really do. But I feel much worse for umpire Jim Joyce.

Joyce’s blown call was the history maker in Wednesday night’s Indians/Tigers game. Minor detail here: the blown call kept Armando Galarraga from being the 21st pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball from pitching a perfect game. Galarraga had retired the first 26 consecutive batters.

So you understand the context, more men have orbited the moon than have thrown perfect games.

Now, the human element to Joyce’s blown call is the major factor here. Half of baseball fans want instant replay while the other half are complaining that the games are too long. Jim Joyce thought he made the right call during the game – it wasn’t until the game was over and he had a chance to watch the replay that he changed his tune.

Joyce also took it upon himself to tearfully march into the Detroit locker room and apologize not only to Galarraga, but the entire team.

Complain all you want about the call – it was obviously wrong – but Jim Joyce is a classy cat. It’s too bad he’ll be the one remembered for this game eons more than Armando Galarraga.

Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig actually has the power to overturn the call and approve the perfect game, but said he has no intentions to do so.

I hope fans will have more respect for Joyce than my beloved Cardinals fans had for Don Denkinger

What say you? Should the call be overturned? Should Joyce be allowed to call games this season?
